International Year of the Nurse & Midwife – The Impact of Black Excellence

LSBU continues to celebrate its championing of nursing & midwifery professions with a focus on the roles & impact of Black nurses & midwives

This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated 2020 as the “International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife” in honour of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. Worldwide, we have seen our nurses and midwives receive the respect appreciation they deserve for their hard work, commitment bravery in light of the pandemic. At LSBU, we are incredibly proud of our nursing midwifery staff, students alumni – and strongly believe this is the response they should receive every day!

In recognition of Black History Month 2020, this ‘In conversation with….’ style event will focus on the impact, stories, challenges triumphs of Black nurses midwives in their professions from the past to the present. We’ll be joined by several fantastic guests who will be talking about their careers experiences as well as their thoughts on the importance of representation, equality opportunity in their professions among other topics. There will also be a chance to ask them questions.

Guest speakers

Marsha Jones is a trained Secondary school science teacher, registered nurse and a practising midwife. Marsha has experiences of working in acute, maternity, community health settings and commissioning. Marsha is Mary Seacole Scholar (Leadership) and a Darzi Fellow. Marsha has nearly 20 years’ experience in the NHS and is currently working at West Herts as Associate Chief Nurse-Quality. In her Organisation, Marsha has been supporting the BAME staff network by working collaboratively with the Executive team.


Marsha is a change management practitioner and a Nye Bevan Graduate that has taken a keen interest in her personal and professional development and that of others.
Marsha’s interests are public health, patient safety, quality improvement, leadership, management, coaching and mentoring, patient experience and staff experience with an interest in BME staff experiences.


Marsha volunteers as a School Governor and has been a previous Chair of Governors. She is also active in the Jamaica Diaspora in championing topical issues such as Domestic Violence and teenage pregnancy. Marsha is also a member of the Nursing Association of Jamaica. She supports activities in her local church and her children’ school.

Ruth Oshikanlu MBE - Nurse entrepreneur Ruth Oshikanlu MBE (MSc Public Health, 2006) is a Queen’s Nurse, parenting coach, health visitor and midwife, and creator of the successful parenting programme Tune In To Your Baby and the coaching service Goal Mind. Ruth awarded an LSBU honorary doctorate last year. To mark the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, Ruth has spent this year interviewing nurses and midwives around the country in a series of talk entitled ‘Nurses Midwives Talks’. Her goal, achieved wonderfully, is to showcase the wonderful contribution Nurses and Midwives make to people from before conception right to the grave. It also celebrates diversity in the profession and the diversity of the roles of nurses and midwives – making Ruth a perfect guest for this event!

Dr Calvin Moorley RN PhD – Calvin is Associate Professor for Nursing Research Diversity in Care within LSBU’s School of Health and Social Care and is a registered nurse who practices intensive care therapy. He is also holder of the Mary Seacole Award for Leadership in Nursing. As well as teaching, Calvin does a great deal of research into a broad range of topics including intersectionality, gender, culture ethnicity. Recently, he has been investigating publishing research the impact of Covid-19 on BAME communities alongside his research students. He is passionate about reverse mentoring too. Calvin is a fantastic speaker and his commitment to his work the issues he focuses on shines through.

This event will be delivered virtually using Zoom. We will send out the joining instructions to everyone who has registered three days before the event.
