The Ottawa Kwanzaa Celebration invites you and your families to be part of this year’s virtual celebration from the comfort of your home - Dec. 27th, 2020
This interactive experience will foster a cultural message of unity, family, and community. Participants can enjoy the celebration from the safety of their homes along with hundreds of individuals and families around the world. This year’s celebration will involve the ‘Sepats” from our youth mentorship program, adults and seniors from our ‘Let’s Chat” program, music, poetry and guest speakers.This experience will teach and elaborate on the culture of Kwanzaa and also shedding light on the history of black culture in Ottawa.
What is Kwanzaa?
Kwanzaa is a non-religious cultural holiday that is celebrated around the world from December 26-January 1 of the New Year. The celebration is designed to promote cultural pride, dignity, and foster a vibrant and healthy community. There are seven principles highlighted during the season of Kwanzaa:
Umoja, Unity, to be unified as a diverse amalgamation of one peopleKujichagulia, Self Determination, to drive oneself to achieve one's goalsUjima, Collective Work and Responsibility, to work for the community Ujamaa, Cooperative Economics, to economically support each otherNia, Purpose, to commit oneself to the betterment of our communityKuumba, Creativity, to do whatever you can in the way you canImani, Faith, to believe in what you are doing and its outcome.Featured Events:
