“What’s in a Name?” Celebrating Black Identity and Culture

Nottingham University Business School

Black History Month Event

Event Dates: Monday 19 October, and Thursday 29 October, 2020

Time: 2:00-3:00pm

What’s in a Name? Celebrating Black Identity and Culture presented by the Nottingham University Business School.

Are you an African or African Caribbean University of Nottingham Student or Young Person in Year 3 to Year 9 in a Nottinghamshire School? This event will inspire your creativity and deepen your understanding of identity and culture.

The Nottingham University Business School celebrates Black History Month with the ‘Name’ Challenge. The event aims to help young African and African Caribbean people to deepen their understanding of identity and culture as they explore the origin and meaning of their names.

Through research and sharing of name stories, the young people will ‘own’ their names and take joy and pride in their meaning. The challenge is an opportunity for participants to share about their heritage, to learn from each other and to build more confident individuals who are respectful and tolerant of each other’s cultures.

Award vouchers will be given to the best presentations in three categories: Key Stage 2 (Year 3 - Year 6), Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – Year 9), and University of Nottingham Students.*

*Prizes are for those in our local community only. If you have a Nottingham/Nottinghamshire postcode, you will be eligible for our prizes. Prizes are Amazon vouchers

Activities:

Name Challenge Introduction (60 minutes): Monday 19th October, 2020

(Time: 2:00-3:00pm)

The first virtual session is led by NUBS staff and supported by students from the One Heritage society.

The young people will be supported by their parents to go online.

Academic staff will introduce the challenge, its purpose and what needs to be done. They will also lead discussions on how to conduct research about their names, and various creative ways of presenting their responses.

UoN students will support the sessions, mentoring the children to help them find the information they require and making suggestions as to how they may creatively respond.

Students will submit their work online. The submission deadline is Friday 23 October, 2020 at 5.00pm. No entries after this time will be considered for the Award Prize.

Name Celebration: Presentations (60 minutes): Thursday 29th October, 2020

(Time: 2:00-3:00pm)

This is the second virtual session where we discuss about the challenge and share some of the creative responses from the young Black school children and UoN students. The students will be asked to reflect together on what they have learnt so far, and what the exercise means to them at a personal level.

The winners of the challenge will receive prize vouchers: Three £40 vouchers, and Three Runners-Up £20 voucher

The judging panel will consist of University staff and a community representative. They will select the winners and announce them at the Presentation event.
