Did you know only 5% of main characters in children's fiction feature black or brown children? Did you know that in 2018, on;y one bestselling title out of 100, featured a black or brown character: Lanky Len the burglar. ffs!
Can we do better than that?!
Yes, we can and we are! I set up Conscious Dreams Publishing four years ago after the success of my own book, Mr Wrong. I had so many authors with powerful messages and stories, and often underrepresented desperate for an outlet to share their story and have their voice heard. Mainstream wasn't listening! Now, four years on, we celebrate 62 of our Black authors and what they have achieved.
Some have educated children about Black History, others have empowered young children by helping them embrace their brown skin and kinky hair, some have created powerful Black female protagonists born to save the world in sci-fi, fantasy novels, others have been visual representation to other aspiring thors who felt they did not have a voice or deserve a spot in the limelight. Their mere presence showed them.
