Happy Easter Weekend frontroom Family! Here's another excerpt of the book.

Hidden or “covert” racists are people who discriminate against someone purely on the basis of race but don’t openly express their views. They keep it inside and reveal their true beliefs when they feel comfortable enough to do so.

This can either be the case when they are within their social group or family or – nowadays – on social media.

Whenever there is an incident involving race or religion, many commentators across the social and digital space reveal their true selves.

Consciously (or not), many comments communicate a level of hostility that is worrying to read and doesn’t bode well for the future. It became clear that although we thought we lived in harmony, there was a racial undertone that had been bubbling underneath.

There were a few who spoke with their chest and said what they felt at the time. It was strange to read as these people never disclosed any of these thoughts previously. They must’ve felt it was the right time to come out of hiding. As Stormzy said, “Now these people have the confidence to come out in public to say everything.”

Speaking about race as a reaction is becoming naturalised. This unfortunately will not help to solve things, it will only divide the nation further.

We need to foster a culture where race is spoken about openly and we can express ourselves freely in a relaxed manner. Racism doesn’t disappear when the news stops covering the latest incident, therefore the dialogue needs to be consistent.
