At Work

In this chapter, we looked at race in the workplace and discussed our shared experiences of being black at work and all that it entails.
It’s true that in the corporate world, particularly in recent times, companies often claim they are diverse – but they’re never pressed on what this claim really means for them.
Remember this marketing campaign by the Italian FA? They used pictures of Monkey’s to help combat racism in Italian football.

This was condemned by the governing bodies across the world, and rightly so. And the artist who drew these paintings' rationale was… “we are all monkeys”. Although the idea was insensitive, I believe it came from a good place.

When embarking on a campaign as sensitive as this, the team should be represented with people of colour, different races and sexes.

People from different walks of life bring different ideas, ideals and experiences. I'm not saying chuck a random person of colour or female in the room for the sake of it, they have to earn their right to be there.

However, once they are there, it's up to the company to ensure that they have space where they feel comfortable to express their ideas, opinions and views.

Anything on here that resonates? Is there a representation of where you work?
